NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: BIODIVERSITY ACT (10/2004): NORMS AND STANDARDS FOR THE MARKING OF RHINOCEROS AND RHINOCEROS HORN, AND FOR THE HUNTING OF RHINOCEROS FOR TROPHY HUNTING PURPOSES

The Minister of Environmental Affairs has published a notice in the Gazette withdrawing Government Notice No. 304 published in Gazette No. 35248 on 10 April 2012 and issuing norms and standards for the marking of rhinoceros and rhinoceros horn and for the hunting of rhinoceros for trophy hunting purposes, in terms of section 9 of the NEM:BA. The norms and standards apply inter alia to species of rhinoceros that are listed as threatened or protected in terms of section 56 of the Biodiversity Act and must be read alongside the regulations pertaining to listed threatened or protected species and promulgated in terms of section 97 of the Biodiversity Act. The norms and standards regulate inter alia, the marking of live rhinoceros and any rhinoceros horn; the management of the hunting of rhinoceros; the procedure for the collection of DNA samples; the disposal of rhinoceros horn and matters incidental thereto.
