NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: WASTE ACT (59/2008) - NATIONAL NORMS & STANDARDS FOR ORGANIC WASTE COMPOSTING

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, in terms of sections 7(1)(c) and 7(2)(a) of the NEMWA hereby sets the national Norms & Standards for organic waste composting for implementation.

The purpose of these Norms & Standards is to –

  • Provide a national uniform approach relating to controlling the composting of organic waste at a facility that falls within the threshold in order to prevent or minimize potential negative impacts on the bio-physical and socio-economic environment; and
  • Ensure implementation of the best practicable environmental option in the compositing of organic waste.

The Norms & Standards apply to organic waste composting facilities that have the capacity to process compostable organic waste, in excess of 10 tonnes per day.
