ASTRONOMY GEOGRAPHIC ADVANTAGE ACT (21/2007): REGULATIONS ON THE PROTECTION OF THE KAROO CENTRAL ASTRONOMY ADVANTAGE AREAS IN TERMS OF THE ACT

The Minister of Science and Technology has, in terms of sections 50 and 51 of the Astronomy Geographic Advantage Act 21 of 2007, made Regulations for the protection of the Karoo Central Astronomy Advantage Areas.

The Regulations pertain to -

  • Regulations to prohibit and restrict the use of certain radio frequency spectrum and certain radio activities in the Karoo central astronomy advantage areas declared for radio astronomy purposes;
  • Regulations on administrative matters for the Karoo central astronomy advantage areas declared for radio astronomy purposes;
  • Regulations on financial compensation procedures for the Karoo central astronomy advantage areas; and
  • Regulations restricting interference due to electrical activities within the Karoo central astronomy advantage area 1.

These Regulations become operational on a date to be determined by the Minister by notice in the Gazette, which date shall not be later than 365 calendar days after the date that these Regulations are published. The notice determining the date of commencement will be published 90 calendar days before the date so determined.
